Bonfire night

This is going to be my journal of 2005/6 school year. I am working in a school in Egypt as a rather fantastic teacher. My third year and I'm guessing it's gonna be a fabulous one. We'll see.

So in England on 5th November, people gather around a largish fire and burn the figure of a man. The man represents Guy Fawkes and is remembered because he and a group of friends tried and failed to blow up the Houses of Parliament many years ago. He was caught and then hanged, drawn (intestines ripped out) and quartered (cut in four pieces and buried separately). We enjoy the day and have great fun burning his effigy and launching fireworks into the night sky.

For the past two years, I have been living in Egypt and tonight, for the first time, a group of us Brits got together and enjoyed a bonfire, with an effigy and lit some sparklers. Post bonfire, we enjoyed bangers and mash (otherwise known as sausage and mashed potato), baked potato, baked beans and hot apple and cinnamon cider. mmmm mmmm mmmm it's all good stuff!!
